Living is hard when you're deep in the Taiga, Echoes of genocide fall from the sky, The wind is cold but the grass would be greener, If I could see it beneath the snow, Her only contact with civilisation, To sharpen the jagged teeth of her saw, When even vehicle fumes could be fatal, Silence and solitude cleanses the soul, Nature's always given, just what we need, Burdock for a nettle sting, edelweiss for non-toxic sunscreen, Spend most of my time on the long road to Launceston, Lost in thought on the A303, Still counting the days when I can return there, To the dolmens and menhirs and saffron-filled dreams, Until that time I'm a nomad, 200 miles away, I'd pack my bags in a heartbeat, you're the only thing, persuading me to stay.

Gone are the days, when we always had hope, Scrounging for batteries, from television remotes, Gran washed Martyn's mouth out, with a green bar of soap, Potions and mudpies, on a make-believe stove, Gone are the days, when we'd jump into the corn, Two black and white bundles, looking forlorn, The vet said one was sickly, and might not last long, But she did, she did, for years she was strong, Gone, those days are all gone, Gone, those days are all gone, Gone are the days, when we'd laugh till we cried, Newly found freedom, at an extortionate price, Midnight RC cars, and bleach-blonde hair dye, And we brought in the snowman, that we built outside, Gone, those days are all gone, Gone, those days are all gone, Countless "are we there yets", the reply always the same, "We'll get there when we get there, please don't ask again", But they're gone, those days are all gone.

I tried to be a doctor, but was terrified by blood, I tried to be an author, but the words just wouldn’t come, I’m not a judge or vet, a nurse or chef, Couldn’t cope with all the stress, I tried to be a lawyer, but couldn’t turn the other cheek, I tried to be a dancer, but I was born with two left feet, My office desk, was such a mess, Just like inside my head, My brother is a chemist working in a sterile lab, Tries to solve the hunger crisis with precision and with facts, But as for me, please don’t take offence, While I’ve got tunes and pencil lead, There’s things I can’t leave unsaid, I hope you understand, I tried to be an actor, but I couldn’t play the part, Every time I’m criticized I take everything to heart, I tried to sculpt, but the clay was dry, Cracks appeared all down each side, My friend she is a teacher, working in a hostile school, Tries to educate her students with her knowledge and her rules, But I’m a bard, I’m a minstrel and I crave the open road, Never knowing where I’m going, With no home to call my own, Playing show after show, So many nights spent all alone, I tried to be a painter, but all the colours turned to brown, I tried to mix them equally so none felt left out, In their case, each has their place, Somewhere to belong.

I once knew a Wiseman, a legend of my time, Sat on top a mountain with a beard as black as night, We all knew and loved the Wiseman with his bold self-righteous charm, Intriguing and exotic with tattoos down his arms, I once knew a Wiseman, who weaved a web of lies, Carved runes and symbols on the wall and lead a secret life, He would preach about morals but didn’t practice what he preached, And when he was discovered, the web was clear to see, Society holds the gavel and time will be the judge Shackled in chains in his mind but free to roam the earth Peace be always upon you he said, when around him chaos reined, You cannot hide from karma when you have so much to pay, I once knew a Wiseman; age was on his side, I ran along side him but then he fell behind, Come, come little Wiseman now it’s you that looks so small, I once knew a Wiseman, I once knew a Wiseman, I once knew a Wiseman but the Wiseman had a fall.

One for Sorrow, The magpie said, The prophecy was spoken, I stood and wept, You are priceless, You are lifeless and cold, You will fight this, With one eye closed, Lilies of white, lilies of red, When I couldn’t find the words you always knew what I meant Less than a child, more than a friend, Part of the family until the end, Tired and alone, lost and afraid, Where there was light a shadow lies in its place, Far away from me, that’s where you belong, You were loyal, You were graceful and proud, You will hold on, If time will allow, Lilies of white, lilies of red, When I couldn’t find the words you always knew what I meant Less than a child, more than a friend, Part of the family until the end, Tired and alone, lost and afraid, Where there was light a shadow lies in its place, Far away from me, that’s where you belong, Far away from me, that’s where you belong.
